SIMAN SANG JUARA

SIMAN THE CHAMPION

AKU NGGA BAKAL JADI ATLET KALAU BUKAN KARENA MAMA

I WOULD'T BECOME AN ATHLETE IF IT WASN'T BECAUSE OF MY MOM

I’ve been acquainted with swimming when I was in 2nd grade of elementary School in Klungkung, Bali during sports classs. At first, I was afraid of water (even being told to take a shower was difficult), but I saw the swimming pool like a big 'bathtub', so I was attracted to this sport. Moreover there was this classmate at school who already could swim in a deep pool and the way he got into the pool was by an amazing acrobatic jump. I was amazed to see it because as for me I thought I just could be drowned in only such a small pond. Then I asked to myself "How come I cannot what he could do?" That's when I told my mom I really wanted to learn how to swim.

Maybe as a mother who knows her child very well, she can see that I have a strong desire to be able to swim. So it only took her a week to find me a place for swimming lessons and 6 months after that I was be able to participate in a swimming competition for elementary schools in Klungkung Regency.

The above story seemed very simple right? Swimming practice leading to participation in a swimming competition. Well, I want to tell you about my Mom’s huge effort for this. The distance from the swimming pool to my house was 1 hour and 30 minutes and she always took me by motorbike. This lasted until I was in my 1st Grade of High School. What I remember the most were times where l usually fell asleep at the backseat of the motorbike because I got tired after school. But my Mom didn't easily give up on taking me to practice. She had me tied with a rope around her body so that I wouldn't fall, and we could arrive safely at the swimming pool. Later I found out that she had had a miscarriage due to fatigue somewhere in that period.

And for sure you could imagine not only delivering and waiting for the training, Mama also prepared meals. This swimming exercise makes you really hungry when after training and of course she didn’t want her son to starve. She really put a careful consideration of nutrition on the menu that she served for me. She even asked my friends what they ate so she could also provide a variety of menus fso I wouldn’t get bored.

It turned out that Mama's decision to fulfill my swimming desire was not only to take me to the swimming lessons, but more than that, she was committed to make me good at what I do. Without her I would not have been able to reach the podium of honor to receive a medal and make Indonesians proud.  I hope she is also proud of my achievement.
